Question Answered

November 2024 - A SLA Member noticed something green around his shoreline and asked SLA what is was?

We sent the question to The Lake Detective, Steve McComas.  Below is his response.

With extended warm weather in September and October, summer-like weather has extended into fall, and I’m noticing late algal blooms in many lakes as well. The blue and green pigments washed on shore are from dying cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Their growing season was a little longer than normal, but they are dying off now (I’ve attached a column I wrote about the longer than normal growing season this year). The  eastern shoreline of Spring Lake gets a lot of plants and algae being blown into shore over the growing season.

Minnesota Boating License

How would you like to have a chance to win a $50 Gift Card?

Watercraft Operator Training | Minnesota Watercraft Operators (MWO) Permits have always been a requirement for youth between the ages of 12-17. A revised provision will begin in 2025 mandating anyone born after 1987 be required to obtain a MWO Permit.

The SLA along with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office strongly encourage all boaters to take and pass the available on-line boating training. The Boat Certificate Training website is https://www.boaterexam.com/usa/minnesota.

To further support this initiative, any paid 2024 SLA Family Member who emails a copy of their permit to Board.SLA@gmail.com by August 1 will be eligible for a drawing for one of ten $50 gift cards.
