ZEBRA MUSSELS ON SPRING LAKE

Zebra mussels are small animals with a striped, D-shaped shell composed of two hinged valves joined by a ligament. The shells are typically one-quarter inch to one and one-half inches long, depending on age, with alternating yellow and brownish colored stripes. Adults are typically fingernail-sized. Zebra mussels attach to hard surfaces underwater.

Invasive species cause recreational, economic, and ecological damage—changing how residents and visitors use and enjoy Minnesota waters.

Zebra mussel impacts:

  • Encrust equipment, such as boat motors and hulls, which reduces performance and efficiency and is costly to clean and repair.
  • Swimmers and pets can cut their feet on zebra mussels attached to rocks, docks, swim rafts and ladders.
  • Create a costly problem for power plants, cities and residents when they clog water intakes.
  • Filter tiny food particles out of the water, which can reduce available food for larval fish and other animals, and can increase aquatic plant growth as a result of increased water clarify.
  • Attach to and kill native mussels.

People spread zebra mussels primarily through the movement of water-related equipment. Mussels attach to boats, docks, swim rafts and boat lifts. They can also attach to aquatic plants. Adult mussels can survive out of water – less than five days in dry conditions, but up to 21 days in very wet conditions (such as inside dock/lift pipes). Microscopic larvae (veligers) can survive in water contained in bait buckets, live wells, bilge areas, ballast tanks, motors and other water-containing devices.

Caddisfly has been found on Spring Lake- October 2023

Caddisfly is a mothlike insects that are attracted to lights at night and live near lakes or rivers.

Because fish feed on the immature, aquatic stages and trout take flying adults,

caddisflies are often used as models for the artificial flies used in fishing.

Caddisfly make their own homes and live in them until they emerge.

They are a macroinvertebrate. Typically, they are a sign of good water quality when present.

Spring Lake Water Quality | December 8, 2021

The Prior Lake Spring Lake Watershed District (PLSLWD) is very pleased to say that in 2021, both Upper Prior Lake and Spring Lake met water quality standards for total phosphorus, chlorophyll A, and water clarity for the SECOND year in a row! The water quality has never been this good in recorded history. This is another great step towards our goal of getting these lakes off the impaired waters list!

Spring Lake 3rd Alum Treatment | 2020

Spring Lake water clarity is the best it has been in years! Our association members and lake owners are grateful for all of the work, including the most recent Alum Treatment, you have done to continually improve the water quality for Spring Lake.

Spring Lake is a great place to live, boat, fish and relax and much of the credit goes to you! Thank You!

Spring Lake Association shares in your mission to manage and preserve the water resources of the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District to the best of your ability using input from our communities, sound engineering practices, and your ability to efficiently fund beneficial projects which transcend political jurisdictions.

We are also thrilled to confirm that we have increased our donation for the fish stocking in Spring Lake to $2,000! We are also delighted that Prior Lake Association and the Local Rotary Chapter are making a donation as well!

We look forward to partnering with you to confirm the types of fish being stocked. We look forward to receiving final details about the fish stock in October so that we can be there at our landing for a small presentation and photo opportunity!

Thanks again for all that you do to ensure we have clean water in Spring Lake.
